Intro

Welcome to the HTVRONT D2 DTF Printer replacement parts series.

In previous tutorial series, we completed:

  • 📘 Basic Tutorials (Lessons 1-11): Unboxing, first print, daily maintenance, hardware, software
  • 🔧 Maintenance Guides (4 parts): Deep cleaning, packing, printhead cleaning, internal components

Today, we begin the fifth and final sectionReplacement Parts Guide. This section covers 5 essential replacement procedures:

📂 Replacement Parts Guide Series:

  • 🔌 1. How to Replace the Cable (this guide)
  • 💧 2. How to Replace the White Ink Filter
  • 🖨️ 3. How to Replace the Ink Pad
  • 🧴 4. How to Replace the Ink Sac

In this first replacement guide, we will cover: How to Replace the Cable (the flexible flat cables connecting the mainboard to the printhead).

⚠️ When to replace the cable:

If your D2 DTF Printer experiences connection issues, intermittent printing, or the printhead doesn't respond, the cables may be damaged or worn. This guide uses official HTVRONT replacement cables only — third-party cables may not be compatible.

🔧 Estimated time: 15-20 minutes | Difficulty: Advanced

🛡️ Before You Begin: Safety & Supplies

⚠️ Critical Safety Precautions:

  • Turn off and unplug the printer before starting — risk of electric shock.
  • Use only official HTVRONT replacement cables — incorrect cables can damage the printhead or mainboard.
  • Work on a clean, static-free surface — cables are sensitive to static electricity.
  • Take photos during disassembly — this will help with reassembly.
  • Label left and right cables — they are not interchangeable.

Supplies You'll Need

  • 🔌 Official HTVRONT replacement cables (left and right)
  • 🪛 Screwdriver (Phillips head, appropriate size)
  • 📋 Electrical tape (for guiding new cables)
  • 🧤 Gloves (recommended for grip and protection)
  • 📱 Camera/phone (to document cable routing before removal)
  • 🏷️ Labels or marker (to mark left/right orientation)

📖 Definition: What Are Printer Cables (FFC)?

Printer cables (Flexible Flat Cables / FFC) are thin, ribbon-like cables that transmit data and power between the mainboard and the printhead. In the D2 DTF Printer, there are two cables — left and right — which are not interchangeable. Damaged cables can cause printhead communication errors, missing colors, or complete printhead failure. Replacement requires partial disassembly of the printhead assembly and careful routing of new cables through the printer chassis.

⚙️ Step-by-Step: How to Replace the Cable

Follow these steps carefully. Take photos at each stage to document cable routing and screw positions.

📍 Step 1: Power Off and Access the Mainboard

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Open the top cover.
  3. Loosen the four screws on the mainboard.
  4. Disconnect the existing cables from the mainboard. (Refer to Pic 1.1, Pic 1.2)

📍 Step 2: Position the Printhead

  1. Manually lower the capping station (the mechanism where the printhead parks).
  2. Move the printhead to the front position for easier access. (Refer to Pic 2)

📍 Step 3: Remove Printhead Covers

  1. Loosen the screws on the two printhead covers and remove them. (Refer to Pic 3.1, Pic 3.2)
  2. Pry open the green clip securing the cables. (Refer to Pic 4)

📍 Step 4: Remove Ink Sacs and Printhead

  1. Move the printhead back to the home position.
  2. Hold the narrow sides of each ink sac and remove them one by one. (Refer to Pic 5)
  3. Remove the four screws around the printhead.
  4. Take the printhead out carefully. (Refer to Pic 6)

⚠️ Caution: Handle the printhead gently. Do not touch the gold contacts or nozzle plate.

📍 Step 5: Disconnect Old Cables

  1. Peel off the tape securing the cables.
  2. Disconnect the cables from both sides (printhead and mainboard ends).
  3. Note: The cables are divided into left and right. Make sure to confirm the direction and orientation before installing new ones.

📍 Step 6: Prepare New Cables

  1. Take the two new cables and ensure the metal contacts face outward (the shiny side).
  2. Stack them together in the correct orientation. (Refer to Pic 7)
  3. Label the left and right sides in advance — this is critical for correct installation. (Refer to Pic 8)

📍 Step 7: Guide New Cables Through the Printer

  1. Align the new cables with the old ones (for example, place new cables in the middle, wrap old cables around them).
  2. Secure everything tightly with electrical tape to create a pulling connection.
  3. Remove the black tape from both ends of the old cables.
  4. Slowly pull the old cables out from inside the machine — the new cables will be guided into place.
  5. Remove the tape connecting the old and new cables once the new cables are fully in position.

⚠️ Tip: Pull slowly and steadily. If you feel resistance, stop and check for snags. Forcing can damage the new cables.

📍 Step 8: Install New Cables

  1. Install the new cables onto the mainboard and the printhead, following the left and right markings you made earlier.
  2. Ensure the metal contacts are properly seated and the cables are inserted fully.
  3. Secure the green clip to lock cables in place.
  4. Reinstall the printhead, ink sacs, and covers by reversing the disassembly steps.
  5. Reconnect the mainboard cables and tighten the four screws.

📍 Step 9: Test the Printer

  1. Plug in and power on the printer.
  2. Run a nozzle check to verify printhead communication.
  3. Print a test image to confirm normal operation.
  4. If the printer does not respond or shows errors, double-check cable connections and orientation.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I know if my printer cables need replacement?

A: Common signs include: printhead not responding, printer not powering on, intermittent printing errors, or missing colors even after cleaning cycles. If you've ruled out software and ink issues, the cables may be damaged.

Q: Can I use third-party cables instead of HTVRONT official ones?

A: No. The D2 DTF Printer uses specific flexible flat cables (FFC) with exact pin counts, pitch, and length. Third-party cables may not fit or could damage the printhead and mainboard. Always use official HTVRONT replacement parts.

Q: The left and right cables look identical. How do I tell them apart?

A: They are physically identical but must be installed in the correct orientation. Label them before removal or during preparation — use a marker or tape to mark "L" and "R". Refer to your pre-disassembly photos or the video tutorial.

Q: What happens if I install the cables backwards?

A: Installing cables with the metal contacts facing the wrong direction (or swapping left/right) can prevent the printhead from communicating with the mainboard. The printer may not power on, or the printhead may not move. In some cases, incorrect installation can damage the printhead. Always double-check orientation.

Q: Do I need to replace cables as routine maintenance?

A: No. Cables are durable and only need replacement when damaged. Unlike ink pads or filters, they are not a consumable item. Only replace them if you experience specific symptoms of cable failure.

Q: The cables were hard to pull through. Is that normal?

A: Some resistance is normal, but excessive force can damage the new cables. If you feel strong resistance, stop and check for snags — the cables may be caught on internal components. Reposition and try again.
