A color-changing mug (also called a heat-changing mug or magic mug) is a ceramic cup that reveals a hidden design when filled with hot liquid. The magic happens thanks to a special thermochromic coating on the mug's surface. At room temperature, this coating is opaque and covers the underlying pattern. But when hot water (above about 60°C / 140°F) is poured in, the coating turns transparent—gradually revealing the colorful design hidden beneath. Once the mug cools down, the coating becomes opaque again, and the image "disappears" until the next use.

In this video, I'll show you three ways to make a color-changing mug—but we'll focus on the most professional method: using a mug heat press.

Method 1 (Main): Mug Heat Press – This creates permanent, vibrant results. You'll need a sublimation-coated mug, sublimation ink, and a mug press. Print your design (mirrored), wrap it tightly, and heat at 180°C for 60 seconds. The design infuses into the coating—disappearing when cold and revealing when hot. This is how commercial magic mugs are made.

Method 2: Erasable Pen – A fun 5-minute craft for kids. Draw with an erasable pen, pour hot water—the ink disappears. Simple, but not permanent.

Method 3: Hand-Coating – For advanced DIYers. Mix thermochromic powder with binder, coat any mug, and cure in an oven. Complex but customizable.
